As yet, there are no physical or psychological tests available for this purpose. The International Classification Systems are rigid and an individual may not be diagnosed if he or she does not fit the precise criteria. Different approaches for diagnosis will be discussed. | 15:40 | Self-injurious behaviour in autism spectrum disorders The presentation will focus on self-injurious behaviour in individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder in combination with a moderate to severe level of intellectual disability. The prevalence and risk of self-injury in ASD will be discussed with reference to data collected by the Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders in partnership with the NAS. From these and other data, risk markers that appear to predict the presence, severity and chronicity of self-injury will be explored. Psychological and biological causes of self-injury will be examined with an emphasis on the development of self-injury as result of pain and/or learning mechanisms. The presentation will then focus on assessment and intervention strategies for self-injury. Finally, the ongoing management of self-injury in individuals with ASD will be discussed.
