The seminar will focus on issues relating to the dilemmas in the diagnosis of the whole autism spectrum and related conditions.  As yet, there are no physical or psychological tests available for this purpose.  The International Classification Systems are rigid and an individual may not be diagnosed if he or she does not fit the precise criteria.

Different approaches for diagnosis will be discussed.  The collection of relevant information by an experienced clinician is the key to help the person concerned.

Self-injurious behaviour in autism spectrum disorders
The presentation will focus on self-injurious behaviour in individuals who have Autism Spectrum Disorder in combination with a moderate to severe level of intellectual disability. The prevalence and risk of self-injury in ASD will be discussed with reference to data collected by the Centre for Neurodevelopmental Disorders in partnership with the NAS. From these and other data, risk markers that appear to predict the presence, severity and chronicity of self-injury will be explored. Psychological and biological causes of self-injury will be examined with an emphasis on the development of self-injury as result of pain and/or learning mechanisms.
