The Autism Spectrum – what are the effects of widening the boundaries of autism?
The term ‘autism spectrum’ was first used in the late 1970s to describe the dimensional nature of autism. These days it encompasses many conditions associated with autism but does the term help or hinder understanding, diagnosis and support? Are we now including people on the spectrum who may just be considered ‘different’ or unusual in a particular society or culture? If we are looking at a number of causes and conditions, how helpful is it to think of them separately or linked together? Consultant psychiatrist Dr Lorna Wing who, together with Dr Judy Gould, first coined the phrase ‘autism spectrum’ will be introducing the debate amongst a panel of professionals and people on the spectrum.
Panel:
Anya Ustaszewski
Joshua Muggleton,
Speaker and Student
